What is Exercise for Addiction Recovery?

When it comes to recovering from addiction, many people discount the importance of developing a regular exercise routine. Actually, when a person moves their body regularly in pursuit of better physical fitness, the results spill over into improving their ability to stay sober. When someone is mired in addiction to drugs or alcohol, their bodies become weaker. They lose the benefits of moving regularly, often for years at a time. Exercising helps improve a person’s physical, mental, and spiritual self, all of which strengthen their ability to remain committed to recovery.

We work with Revive of the USA, which is a team of certified fitness trainers who come to our facility to provide exercise for addiction recovery. The trainers have experience with addiction, trauma, and other behavioral conditions, which means they have a unique understanding of what it takes to heal.

How Does Exercise for Addiction Recovery Help?

Exercise for addiction recovery offers multiple benefits that people in recovery need to help them achieve their goals. For example, people who enter recovery from addiction often feel stress. They want to do well in their therapy sessions, repair damaged relationships, and make smart choices that keep them in recovery. This can cause a lot of stress, which can be relieved by incorporating exercise into the person’s schedule.

As well, many people who have a substance use disorder experience depression. They may also feel depressed when they first begin recovery. Consistent exercise provides a natural boost to a person’s serotonin levels and offers relief from depressive symptoms. Regular exercise also helps people enjoy healthy sleep patterns.

A hallmark of addiction is having a lack of a schedule, which leaves a lot of free time spent engaging in toxic behaviors. Another benefit of exercise for addiction recovery is that having regular workouts adds structure to a person’s day. This can spill over into making it easier for the individual to add structure in other areas of their lives. Finally, exercise can be done as part of a group, which provides a social outlet many people in recovery crave.

What Types of Addiction Does Exercise Help?

A regular exercise routine also helps people who have a dual diagnosis, which is the presence of both a substance use disorder and a mental health disorder.

How Else Is Addiction to Drugs and Alcohol Treated?

Exercise for addiction recovery is just one aspect of multiple types of therapy used to treat substance use disorders. In fact, when someone participates in a variety of types of therapy, they expand their ability to stay sober for life.

Our program includes individual therapy, family therapy, social skills therapy, psychotherapy, and more.

Some therapy sessions take place one-on-one with just the individual and their personal therapist. Other types involve small groups of people working together in pursuit of common goals. This type of peer support proves valuable by uniting people who understand the struggles of addiction and share a commitment to overcoming it.

What are the Levels of Outpatient Care?

Outpatient care can be done on different levels, which vary in terms of how many days the sessions take place and for how many hours each day. Exercise for addiction recovery can be included in several levels of care and even continued after the conclusion of treatment. The levels of outpatient treatment include:

Outpatient Program (OP): OP requires just a few hours per week of therapy sessions.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): IOP takes place five days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Evening IOPThis type of IOP gives people the option to attend evening programs from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Day Treatment Program: The highest level of outpatient care runs Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
