What is Kratom?

Kratom is a drug that originated in Southeast Asia and comes from manufacturing the leaves of a tree called mitragyna speciosa. Locals originally used it as a medical treatment for ailments such as diarrhea, pain, and coughing. It is also used as a way to boost a person’s energy. In the past several years, kratom use has increasingly become more common in the U.S., creating an increase in the need for rehab for kratom. Kratom can be consumed as a tablet, capsule, or extract. It can also be mixed into drinks like hot tea or the leaves can be chewed.

As of now, kratom has not yet been declared an illegal substance. However, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has classified it as a “drug of concern” and warns people not to consume it. Despite developing concerns, many people use kratom to increase their energy, feel more relaxed and sociable, or produce a feeling of sedation.

You are not alone. You deserve to get help.

Lake Avenue Recovery is an industry leader in addiction treatment in Massachusetts. Our team of top medical experts specialize in dual diagnosis treatment and are committed to ensuring that each patient is treated as an individual. Call us today, we’re available 24/7.

Is Kratom Addictive?

The FDA continues to do studies to understand the full effects of the extended use of kratom. While definitive cases of traditional definitions of addiction are not rampant, there do occur and are a cause for concern. Someone who repeatedly uses kratom risks becoming psychologically addicted to it, and may also develop a physical reliance on it. Someone can also develop an unhealthy dependence on misusing the drug because their body grows used to ingesting it.

When this happens, the individual will experience withdrawal symptoms when they stop using kratom. What level of addiction a person develops depends on how often they use it, what dosage they use, the potency of each batch, and any underlying medical or psychological conditions they have.

Treatment Options for Kratom Addiction

Whenever someone develops an addiction to a substance, they need professional care to help them overcome this challenging disease. Rehab for kratom takes place on more than one level. It begins with attending a detox program that provides valuable medical support to help a person safely detoxify their systems. From there, some people move to a residential facility for a period of time. Another option is going to outpatient treatment, which allows the person to attend therapy sessions during the day but still live in their own home. Anyone experiencing withdrawal symptoms during treatment can take prescription medications that help minimize them. This advantage can be used during all levels of treatment.

Does Insurance Cover Kratom Rehab?

Anytime someone abuses a substance to the point they develop a reliance on it or an addiction to it, they will need professional treatment. Most insurance companies embrace this fact and, as a result, they cover getting medical and psychological help for substance use disorders. This includes rehab for kratom, making getting treatment available to a wide number of people.
