What is Drug Addiction?
When someone becomes addicted to drugs, their entire life becomes affected. Drug addiction may start out with someone taking prescription drugs to improve their health but then they find their usage spirals into abuse. For others, what might start as recreational use of illegal substances can turn into a substance use disorder.
A person’s brain naturally produces feel-good chemicals, such as endorphins, that help them feel joy and pleasure. When they develop a drug addiction, they begin to rely on the substance producing these feelings instead. This contributes to the difficulty the individual has when they try to stop using drugs. Their body is now conditioned to the drug making them feel good. Because of this, it becomes necessary to enter drug rehab in Massachusetts in order to receive the clinical support necessary to stop relying on drugs and let the body and brain return to functioning normally.

What Our Drug Rehab in Massachusetts Treats
How We Treat Drug Addiction
We personally developed our drug rehab in Massachusetts to reflect our belief in CURE: treating people through Compassion, Understanding, Respect, and Empathy. We offer a menu full of trauma-informed therapies that include a holistic approach to ending a person’s reliance on drug abuse. The types of therapy we offer include:
Adventure Therapy: Adventure therapy involves recreational activity with a therapeutic component. You might do things like hiking, rock climbing, ropes courses, or kayaking. This can help you develop self-confidence and find healthy coping activities.
Exercise Program: Exercise releases endorphins and other “feel-good” chemicals to increase feelings of wellness throughout your body. This can help to improve your physical and mental well-being. Exercises include weight training, running, walking, and fitness classes.
Trauma Therapy: Traumatic experiences are a common underlying cause of addiction and co-occurring mental health disorders. Trauma therapy programs specializing in treating symptoms of trauma as well as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Individual Therapy: One-on-one therapy sessions help you address issues unique to your addiction. This gives you the privacy you need to open up and develop coping skills.
Group Therapy: Group therapy sessions include a therapist as a facilitator of a group discussion of peers in recovery. In addition, you can practice communication skills with peers.
Holistic Therapy: Holistic approaches during rehab include activities like mindfulness, meditation, expressive arts, and yoga. This will enhance your treatment program by addressing all aspects of your health and well-being.
Acupuncture: Acupuncture involves using dry needles to access specific points in the body to release tension and promote blood flow. This practice can alleviate physical pain associated with withdrawal and stress.
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Cognitive-behavioral therapy is one of the most commonly used therapeutic modalities. CBT treats several disorders, like addiction, anxiety, depression, and PTSD.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT): Dialectical behavioral therapy improves treatment outcomes for those with challenging emotions and self-destructive behaviors. During DBT, you gain skills in four main areas (1) mindfulness, (2) emotion regulation, (3) distress tolerance, and (4) interpersonal effectiveness.
Aftercare Planning: It’s important to continue your recovery after active treatment. Aftercare planning can include ongoing therapy, peer support, career counseling, and supportive housing.

What Does a Typical Day Look Like?
Our program for drug rehab in Massachusetts isn’t of the cookie-cutter variety. We believe in treating each person like the individual they are and making their time with us feel comfortable and progressive. Each day begins in a homelike environment and includes meeting by the fireplace for coffee and some time to prepare for the day’s sessions. From there, each person attends their therapy sessions with the full support of our staff of addiction-therapy-trained therapists. Because everyone who comes to us for help has the same goal of becoming sober, our clients enjoy the added boost of peer support when they are with us.
Our Massachusetts Drug Rehab Programs
Lake Avenue Recovery offers outpatient treatment programs in Massachusetts. However, we also partner with other providers to ensure that you get the care you need before entering our program.
The following are the levels of care you can expect during drug and alcohol rehab:
- Detox: Drug and alcohol detox is the first step to recovery from addiction and dual-diagnosis disorders. We partner with detox providers in the area to help you get started in your recovery.
- Residential Treatment: Residential treatment programs, also called inpatient rehab, provide 24/7 support for individuals in recovery from addiction and dual-diagnosis disorders. Our residential treatment partners give you the support needed to advance to our outpatient programming.
- High-Intensity Outpatient Treatment: This is the highest level of outpatient programming available in Massachusetts. You’ll be in treatment from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, 5 days per week. However, unlike residential treatment, you can return home each day or reside in a sober living program throughout the program.
- Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): Our intensive outpatient program continues the work of our high-intensity program, however, you’ll be in treatment for about half the time. That way, you can resume normal daily activities while still getting significant support. We also have an evening IOP for those who need more flexibility in scheduling.
- Outpatient Program: Regular outpatient programs are the lowest level of care available. This may include meeting with a therapist or attending a group session once or twice weekly.
