What is the Purpose of Group Therapy?

The history of group therapy dates back to the early 1900s. The purpose of our group therapy in Massachusetts is to provide a safe and private space for people with similar life challenges to come together. Having similar issues, emotions, and experiences helps build bonds and allows people to speak openly about what they’re going through. Group therapy helps people identify the commonalities of the issues the group members have.

Group therapy is commonly used during treatment for substance use disorders as well as mental health disorders like depression or bipolar disorder. The group works as a team to learn how to develop healthy coping skills that will enable them to stay sober. Group members receive professional treatment from the therapist while also enjoying peer support.

Types of Group Therapy We Offer

Lake Avenue Recovery offers a multitude of types of group therapy. They include:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT is a common therapy used to treat addiction and mental illness. Peers work as a unit on topics such as their core beliefs, changing their thought processes, and developing positive affirmations.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT): The four components of DBT include Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Interpersonal Effectiveness, and Emotional Regulation. Each component helps people understand how to develop healthy coping skills and avoid the temptation to relapse.

Process Groups: This is a more general type of group therapy in that each session doesn’t have one specific topic. Members can bring up issues they’re struggling with and a conversational give-and-take takes place.

Psychoeducational Groups: The group leader addresses specific topics during each session such as dealing with difficult emotions. The group members learn how to improve their ability to remain sober and deal with uncomfortable topics.

Levels of Care We Provide Group Therapy In

Anyone interested in group therapy in Massachusetts can take advantage of it in many levels of care. They include:

Day Treatment: Also known as a Partial Hospitalization Program, Day Treatment meets from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. It is the highest level of care we offer and requires the most time in attendance.

IOP: Our intensive outpatient program requires attendance Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This option works well for those who have their mornings free. They can then take care of their personal responsibilities in the afternoon and evening.

Evening IOP: Evening IOP requires attendance up to four times a week from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. This schedule works well for those who need their days free and can attend treatment in the evening.

How Can Group Therapy Be Beneficial in Addiction Treatment?

People in recovery from addiction often feel isolated and hesitate to try to talk about what they’re thinking and feeling with others. Group therapy in Massachusetts helps people realize that they are not alone. They can speak openly without shame or fear of judgment. Group therapy allows people to give and receive support from their peers. This can provide fresh perspectives on old problems and an ability to approach the challenges of recovery with a new way of thinking.

Group therapy also provides the opportunity for people to socialize with each other. This allows them to become more comfortable being around others and elevates their ability to have healthy relationships.
