What is Trauma?

Trauma is an event that frightens, disturbs, and negatively impacts a person. It may be a one-time event, like surviving a hurricane, or an ongoing series of events like domestic violence. Some people overcome trauma after a short while, whereas others internalize the effects of it and need professional treatment to overcome its effects.

When this happens, it’s important to seek PTSD treatment in Massachusetts. Most people experience at least one event in their lives that falls under the heading of trauma.

How Do I Know I Need PTSD Treatment?

If you experienced something traumatic in your past or an ongoing situation, you might know something is wrong but not feel certain about what to do. Someone in need of PTSD treatment in Massachusetts will often find they cannot let go of the traumatic event. They keep reliving it, having flashbacks, and dreaming about it.

PTSD affects a person’s ability to feel peaceful and have healthy relationships. It may cause the individual to avoid certain people, locations, and activities because they fear being triggered. PTSD makes people isolate and often contributes to developing other mental health disorders like depression and anxiety.

If you suspect you may need treatment for PTSD, talk to your doctor or a mental health counselor and ask for a screening.

What Programs We Offer PTSD Treatment In

Lake Avenue Recovery recognizes that people in need of treatment for substance use disorders have a variety of schedules. They want to find a program that meets their needs in terms of services provided, levels of care, and hours required.

We offer three levels of PTSD treatment in Massachusetts to meet the needs of each person who comes to us for help.

Day Treatment: Also known as Partial Hospitalization, this is our highest level of care. It takes place Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Intensive Outpatient Program: Our IOP program takes place Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This is a lower level of care than Day Treatment and works well for people who can commit to morning sessions and have the rest of their days free.

Evening IOP: This is the same level of care as IOP, but takes place up to four times a week from 5:30 to 9:00 pm. People who work or have other commitments during the day can take advantage of our evening IOP hours and still get the valuable help they need.

What To Expect in our Massachusetts PTSD Treatment Program

Part of what makes our PTSD treatment in Massachusetts so successful is that we believe in the power of attending several types of therapy. We offer the following options:

  • Adventure therapy: We are located with quick access to gentle hiking trails and a lake for adventure therapy.
  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT): DBT helps people change how they think and react, which allows them to accept themselves and make healthier decisions.
  • Trauma therapy: Therapy built around helping people heal from trauma.
  • Individual therapy: One-on-one therapy helps individuals open up about their emotions, behaviors, and thoughts.
  • Group therapy: Learn to heal with peer support during group therapy from people who understand addiction.
  • Holistic therapy: A variety of holistic approaches help a person heal physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
  • Acupuncture: Pain-free use of tiny needles in the body during acupuncture helps reduce anxiety.
  • Exercise program: Certified fitness trainers teach people to incorporate exercise into their daily lives.

How Effective is PTSD Treatment in Massachusetts?

The National Center for PTSD reports that just over half of patients who participate in Cognitive Processing Therapy, Prolonged Exposure Therapy, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy are no longer diagnosed as having PTSD. The use of medications can also help improve those figures.
